Melt-Blown fabrics are widely used in the production of surgical masks, commodity masks, and filtering facepieces, otherwise known as FFP1, FFP2, FFP3 respirators.
Masks that are made with Melt Blown fabric with BFE of 99.41% can effectively block the spread of bacteria and viruses. This prevents cross-infection among people and the spread of various bacteria at different times of year. It can also effectively prevent pollen allergy and reduce the impact of harmful pollutants, bacteria and viruses on the human body. This is beneficial for doctors, nurses and other medical staff, as well as private individuals.
Melt Blown non-woven fabric - A Progress in Filtration
Melt Blown filter layers used in masks, known as melt blown cartridges, are a significant advancement in filtration technology. The modern melt blown production technique utilises extrusion, specialized die with very small noozles and a high speed hot air. Such combination produces polymers webs that are blown out of the orafices of die and are later deposited on the calender or a special conveyor belt . The resulting microfibre is about 0.1-2 µm thick and the sheet consisting of randomly orientated fibers is further wound onto a drum. This one-stage process allows to obtain high-performance filter fabric, where the fibres are wrapped around each other and are closely matched to form a compact, stable yet breathable structure.
Modern Melt Blown filter fabrics are made out of different layers with different densities, as the size of the polymer fiber can be manipulated with various parameters: the speed of rotation of the drum, calender or the speed of hot air. With filtering Melt Blown cartridges the end caps are thermally bonded without the use of adhesives or special binders as the thermal bond itself produces strong fit.
Melt blown filter fabrics have an exceptionally high chemical resistance and can be used in many filtration applications, e.g. ideal for use in personal protective equipment such as masks as well as for purifying and retaining contaminants in spring water, drinking water, water used for pharmaceutical processes, or in reverse osmosis.
DESCRIPTIONN OF POLYPROPYLENE MELT BLOWN PRODUCTION PROCESS
In the Melt Blown type non-woven fabric extrusion line, the polypropylene granulate is melted under the influence of high temperature and then passes through a specialized die-head made of a steel alloy in which many micron siezed holes are drilled. The holes in the head are so small that it is necessary to use a additional light source to see them. From the head, the molten polymer passes through these holes like through a tiny sieve, molten plastic sheet comes out, which is then sprayed out with high velocity hot air straight onto the tape on a rotating calender. Calibrating the fleece can be achived with modifiying temperature, air pressure and DCD (Die to calender) distance. This process takes place at a very high speed. In this way, a soft, evenly melted and distributed fibrous material is produced, which then solidifies after cooling down. Each batch of nonwoven fabric produced in Medi-Laabs is subject to a rigorous quality assessment process carried out in a factory laboratory. Medi-Laabs produces Melt Blown nonwovens utilizing five medium sized process lines and an additional high-yield line.
